What NYC renters ask us most.
A rug cleaner is a carpet extractor used on a loose rug — it sprays cleaning solution deep into the pile, then vacuums the dirty water straight back out. A steam cleaner uses hot vapour and far less water: gentler on delicate fibres, but it lifts less embedded grit. For a synthetic rug with a worn traffic path, the extractor wins. For a quick refresh, or anything wool or vintage, a low-moisture steam cleaner is the safer tool. Every listing on Green Gooding says which type it is before you book.
Carefully — and not always. Hot steam and high moisture can shrink wool, and can set or bleed some natural dyes; those are exactly the two things that make a hand-knotted or antique rug expensive to repair. If your rug is wool, silk, or vintage, choose a low-moisture machine over a hot steam extractor, spot-test in a hidden corner first (under the sofa, or a folded-back edge), and let that patch dry completely before you do the whole rug. Synthetic rugs — polypropylene, nylon, polyester — handle steam and extraction fine. If you don't know what the rug is made of and it has real value, a professional clean is the cheaper mistake.
Most synthetic rugs are touch-dry in 2–4 hours and fully dry in 6–12. Thick wool piles take longer — plan on overnight. Dry both sides: lift the rug off the floor or drape it over chairs so air reaches the backing, open a window, and point a fan at it. Putting furniture back on a damp rug is how you end up with a mildew smell and dents in the pile.
Same-day pickup is available in most covered neighborhoods. Book before noon and you can often pick up within a few hours. Scheduled delivery is available on select listings for next-morning drop-off.
Both. Green Gooding lists machines from individual neighbors and from professional local rental shops side by side — neighbors are often the cheapest and closest, while shops tend to have more units and predictable availability. Some listings also offer door delivery for a small fee set by the owner; when it's available, you'll see the option, with its price and coverage radius, right on the listing before you book.
We currently cover Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Park Slope, Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and parts of Manhattan (Lower East Side, East Village, Astoria). More neighborhoods added weekly — check availability for your zip code.
